Multi-week Ha Giang loops, northwest treks, and north–south overland sequences fail at immigration counters more often than on mountain passes — when permitted stay is shorter than the itinerary, when passport validity does not meet entry rules, or when extension assumptions no longer match current policy.
This article explains entry and stay concepts for long-form Vietnam travel. It is not legal or immigration advice. Verify everything on Vietnam Immigration Department official portals (including evisa.gov.vn) and with your embassy or consulate for your passport nationality.

Separate concepts · do not merge them
**Visa validity** — the period during which your visa document itself is valid for use (dates printed on approval or stamp).
**Permitted stay** — the maximum duration you may remain in Vietnam on that visa or exemption, which may differ from visa validity dates.
**Single vs multiple entry** — whether you may leave and re-enter on the same visa. Single-entry visas typically end on exit; re-entry usually requires a new visa unless your document explicitly allows multiple entries.
**Visa exemption** — nationality-specific entry without a visa for a defined period. Exemption rules differ from e‑Visa rules and from extension rules.
**Temporary residence** — a distinct administrative status with its own eligibility and procedures; not the same as a tourist visa extension.
**Extension** — continuing stay in Vietnam beyond the initial permitted period, when law and your visa type allow it, through official immigration channels.
**New visa application** — applying for a fresh visa (often from outside Vietnam or through authorised channels) rather than extending in country.
E‑Visa · what to verify on evisa.gov.vn
Vietnam operates an electronic visa system for many nationalities through the official portal at evisa.gov.vn. Eligible countries, permitted ports of entry, maximum stay length, and single vs multiple entry options change with policy updates.
Apply only through official Immigration Department channels. Third-party visa agencies add fees, error risk, and no guarantee of entry approval.
An e‑Visa approval letter is not a promise of entry. Border officers may refuse entry if documents, passport validity, or purpose of visit do not meet requirements at the time of inspection.
We do not publish current e‑Visa duration figures as fixed facts — confirm permitted stay for your nationality on the portal at the time you apply.
Do not assume a 90-day e‑Visa automatically extends in country. Extension eligibility depends on visa type, nationality, and current regulations — verify before travel, not with two days remaining on your stay.
Matching stay length to adventure itineraries
Combinations such as Ha Giang riding, northwest trekking, Phong Nha caving, and delta time easily exceed three weeks of active travel plus rest days.
Map your **permitted stay** end date against your last planned border crossing or departure flight. Build buffer for weather delays common on adventure routes.
North–south overland frameworks need the longest stays — see
north–south Vietnam expedition for route scale; align visa planning before booking.
We align operational dates with your confirmed immigration status. We do not provide immigration timelines, extension processing estimates, or entry outcome guarantees.
Extension vs new application
Extension procedures, fees, eligible visa types, and in-country vs out-of-country options change. Some tourist e‑Visas may not be extendable; policy shifts have occurred in recent years.
When extension may be available, submission is typically through immigration offices or authorised agencies listed on official portals — verify current legal channels on xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn or evisa.gov.vn; do not rely on informal advice alone.
Exit and re-entry (sometimes called a "visa run") is not a reliable strategy. Entry on a new visa depends on nationality rules, prior stay history, and officer discretion at the border — we do not describe visa runs as a certain path to re-entry.
We do not promise extension approval, processing time, or entry outcome for any nationality or visa type.
We do not publish extension fees unless citing an official fee schedule current at review date — verify fees on official portals when you apply.
Passport and entry paperwork
Passport validity requirements (commonly six months beyond intended entry) and blank-page rules apply — verify exact requirements for your passport on official sources and with your airline.
Damage, missing pages, and child passport rules may cause refusal at check-in before immigration.
Outbound ticket requirements vary by airline and nationality — confirm with your carrier; immigration may ask for proof of onward travel in some cases.
Planning checklist · verify before you fly
Confirm e‑Visa eligibility, permitted stay, entry ports, and single/multiple entry for your nationality on evisa.gov.vn.
Count adventure days plus buffers; compare to permitted stay — not merely visa validity dates.
Identify extension or new-application options on official portals before departure — not from a homestay with two days left.
Save digital copies of approval letters and passport data page.
