The Experience

Six days looping through three of the Mekong Delta's most distinct provinces — Ben Tre's coconut canals, Can Tho's wholesale floating markets, and Tra Vinh's Khmer pagoda backroads. You move on small bicycles, wooden sampans, and the public river ferries that locals still ride to cross the nine arms of the river. No tour buses. No staged villages. Just the unhurried pulse of the southern delta on its own terms.

The route, unfiltered.

01
Transfer + 2 hrs sampan

Saigon → Ben Tre · Coconut canal welcome

Ho Chi Minh City → Ben Tre Province
Morning pickup from your Saigon hotel and a two-hour transfer south across the Rach Mieu bridge into Ben Tre — the coconut heart of the delta. Lunch at a riverside garden kitchen: caramelized clay-pot fish, coconut-water rice, river prawns. Afternoon switch to a wooden sampan for a slow exploration of narrow water-coconut canals where the canopy closes overhead. Visit a small family workshop making coconut candy by hand. Settle into a riverside homestay by late afternoon. Welcome dinner with the host family on a wooden deck above the water.
02
25 km cycling + 2 ferries

Ben Tre backroads by bicycle

Ben Tre rural communes · river ferry crossings
An easy 25 km bicycle day on flat dyke paths between rice paddies, fruit orchards, and brick kilns. Cross small wooden monkey-bridges (the support guide spots you), and ride two short public river ferries the way locals do — bicycle wedged between motorbikes and baskets of fish. Lunch with a farming family: bánh xèo crispy pancakes folded with garden herbs. Afternoon: paddle hand-rowed sampans deep into a nipa palm tunnel. Return to the homestay for sunset tea and a slow river-fish dinner.
03
Ferry + 20 km cycling

Ben Tre → Tra Vinh · Khmer pagoda country

Ben Tre → Co Chien ferry → Tra Vinh
Morning transfer to the Co Chien river ferry — a long open-deck crossing that drops you in Tra Vinh, a quiet province where the Khmer minority has lived for over a thousand years. Afternoon bicycle ride through ancient ang pagoda groves shaded by 300-year-old sao trees. Visit Hang Pagoda and a working Khmer monastery where novice monks chant at dusk. Dinner at a Khmer family kitchen: bún nước lèo fish-broth noodles, prahok-seasoned grilled pork. Boutique stay in Tra Vinh town tonight.
04
20 km cycling + 2 hrs boat

Tra Vinh coastal villages · Sandbank lunch

Tra Vinh → Long Hoa → Con Chim islet
Bicycle out to Long Hoa, a coastal Khmer village known for sea-salt fields and traditional weaving. Continue by small boat to Con Chim — a tidal islet of mangrove, shrimp ponds, and organic rice paddies that locals call 'the green lung of Tra Vinh.' Lunch on a sandbank with a fishing family: clay-pot snakehead, river prawns, palm-sugar dessert. Afternoon free for a slow walk through the islet's footpaths or a hammock nap under the casuarinas. Return to Tra Vinh by late afternoon.
05
Transfer + 2 hrs sampan

Tra Vinh → Can Tho · Cai Rang at sunrise

Tra Vinh → Vinh Long → Can Tho
Early transfer to Can Tho, the river capital of the delta. Afternoon back-canal sampan ride through orchards and stilt-house villages around Phong Dien. Stop at a 100-year-old rice noodle workshop on the riverbank to see the steam-and-bamboo process unchanged for generations. Sunset stroll along Ninh Kieu wharf. Early dinner — tonight is short because tomorrow starts before dawn. Riverside boutique hotel in Can Tho.
06
Pre-dawn boat + transfer

Cai Rang floating market · Return Saigon

Can Tho → Cai Rang → Saigon
Up at 5am — the only proper time to see Cai Rang. Board a private wooden boat in the dark with coffee in hand. Arrive the floating market at first light as 200+ wholesale boats trade pineapple, watermelon, dragonfruit hull-to-hull. Eat phở on a tiny vendor sampan rocking against ours. Mid-morning return to shore, breakfast on land, then transfer back to Saigon by midday. Drop-off at your Saigon hotel or airport by 3pm. The loop closes. The river keeps moving.

"The loop only works if you let the ferry decide when you cross. That is the Mekong."
